It often happens that the three terms wellness, wellbeing and welfare are used, unknowingly and incorrectly, as synonyms of each other. In fact, even if each of the concepts to which these words refer is linked to the idea of well-being, it is important to learn to recognize an accurate distinction between them, which helps us understand the meaning and characteristics of each .
What is meant by wellness?
A "formal" definition of the term wellness is provided by the Global Wellness Institute, which identifies it as the process of active research of activities, styles and lifestyle choices that lead to a holistic health condition. It is evident, therefore, that reference is not made to a static state of things, but to a proactive and dynamic research, in fact, and secondly that well-being goes beyond mere health physics, incorporating many different dimensions in a holistic view.
Physical state, Psyche and Society are in fact the three fundamental aspects of well-being, which can only be achieved through the balance between these factors, to which it is attributed equal importance. The sub-dimensions to consider are much more numerous (the emotional one, the spiritual one, the environmental one, the working one...).
What does wellbeing mean?
The dynamism of the notion of wellness does not recur, however, in that of wellbeing, and this is the fundamental difference between the two. Well being, in fact, refers to a state of being, to a static condition that we could define as "good health.
It is important to underline, however, that reference is made in particular to mental health and the emotional sphere, which in this case are the two dimensions that play a predominant role.
Studying the wellbeing level of a population can often be useful, for example, in measuring the effectiveness of certain welfare policies.

What does the term welfare mean?
And this is how we move on to the definition of the latter, which refers precisely to all those services activated within a company to protect the citizen and the person. It is not just a question of government or state initiatives (included in the so-called "first welfare"), but also of those benefits and services that companies provide in favor of their employees in order to improve their private life and work.
